Where our data comes from

Every price on this site comes from data the fuel retailers themselves publish. Nothing is crowdsourced, estimated or scraped from photos of forecourt totems.

The Fuel Finder scheme

Since 2 February 2026, UK petrol stations have been legally required to publish their pump prices under the Motor Fuel Price (Open Data) Regulations 2025. Each forecourt must report any price change to the government's designated aggregator within 30 minutes. That scheme is called Fuel Finder, and it covers every registered filling station in the country.

We use that official open data directly. It's the same source the government publishes to price comparison sites and satnavs, released under the Open Government Licence v3.0.

How often prices update

We take a fresh copy of the official data every day and rebuild the site from it. Every page shows when its data was last updated, so a stale price never sits on the page dressed up as a live one.

What the data can and cannot tell you

Prices are pence per litre for standard grades: E10 unleaded, E5 super unleaded, B7 diesel and SDV super diesel. A price can change at the pump a few minutes before it changes in the data, so treat the totem as the final word. Some stations price differently at the kiosk for account holders or fuel cards; the published figure is the standard drive-up price.

Prices we leave out

Forecourts type their own prices into the scheme, and a few get it wrong. We check every price before it reaches the site. A price more than 45p above or 40p below the UK median for its fuel is almost always an error: that band clears motorway services and island forecourts, the dearest genuine prices in the country. So is a station charging more than 10p a litre extra for unleaded over diesel, which usually means the grades were entered against the wrong fuel. We leave those prices out of every list, ranking and average, and we never correct them. The station's own page shows what it reported. In the current data that applies to 15 prices at 12 stations, out of 8,081.

Old prices

Forecourts only have to report when a price changes, so a price that hasn't moved for a while can still be right. Most change often: when we set this rule, 94% of stations had reported within the previous week, and prices more than 30 days old sat about 7p under the national median, which looks more like a station that has stopped reporting than a bargain. So a price reported more than 30 days before our latest data still appears on its station's card and page with the date it was reported, but it's left out of cheapest prices, averages, rankings and the green and red colouring. A price with no report date is treated the same way. In the data to 4 November 2026 that applies to 3629 stations.

Where stations are on the map

Each forecourt reports its own map coordinates too, and a few are wrong: one missing minus sign put a Birmingham garage in the sea off Great Yarmouth. We check every station against the centre of its own postcode, from the ONS Postcode Directory. Within 10 miles we keep the reported point, because a rural postcode or a motorway services address can sit a few miles from the pumps. If the coordinates have a flipped sign, have latitude and longitude swapped, sit on a default map point, or land more than 10 miles from a postcode that exists, we use the postcode's location instead, and the station's page says so. A station whose postcode doesn't exist and whose coordinates fall outside the UK is left out of town lists and near-me searches. In the current data we've placed 13 stations by postcode.
